This organic and shade grown coffee is grown in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG) on small plots, known as “coffee gardens”, by around 260 members of the Kamano Tribal Group which all belong to the Timuza Coffee Cooperative.

This land in the Eastern Highlands is dense, very lush and fertile containing a blend of rainforest climates, tall granite peaks and alpine grasslands at an altitude between 5,000-6,000 ft. above sea level. The coffee grows in volcanic black and red loam soils under the shade of casuarina and albizia trees with ample rain and sunshine. Farmers use organic and shade growing methods by intercropping coffee with food staples and cash crops like sweet potato, potato, banana, broccoli, taro and cabbage.

This cooperative uses the fully washed method and then dries the beans in the sun on elevated tables allowing the constant breezes to naturally dry the coffee. Because of this labor intensive washing/drying process, the PNG coffees closely resemble the profiles of washed coffees from South America and Ethiopia, rather than the Indonesians.

Papua New Guinea is also a hotspot for frog diversity, with over 300 species of frogs recorded so far. Many of these frogs are endemic to the island and are found nowhere else in the world. Sustainable organic/shade grown coffee farming is helping protect the habitats of these frogs by maintaining healthy ecosystems.
