Certification: organic, shade grown
This organic and shade grown coffee is grown on family owned farms in the Kintamani Highlands on the island province of Bali, Indonesia.
The Kintamani Highlands, where most Balinese coffee is grown, sits atop a large volcanic plateau between 4500-6000 ft above sea level. The high altitude, rich volcanic soil and cool breezes contribute to the unique flavor and character of this coffee.
The coffee plants are grown under shade trees such as Erythrina and Albizia, as well as tangerine, orange and banana which produce more income for the farming families. The entire island bans pesticides and uses only organic fertilizers. This Balinese coffee is naturally processed which lets the coffee beans dry inside of their cherry skins, imparting a delightful fruity sweetness into the beans. Once dried, they are de-husked, rinsed, and dried in the sun again before weighing and bagging.
The farmers who grow Kintamani Natural belong to cooperative organizations known as Subak Abian founded on a Hindu philosophy known as “Tri Hita Karana” (the three causes of happiness). These co-ops foster community in agricultural, social and religious activities.
