Honduras "La Tigra"

Roast Profile:  Medium dark
Flavor Profile: Rich, full bodied with a very smooth finish.
Certification: organic, shade grown, fairly traded

This organic, shade grown, and fairly traded Honduran coffee is grown near the village of San Juancito.  From its humble beginnings in 1984, the San Juan Joint Cooperative, or COMISAJUL has grown from 13 farmers to 350 providing hundreds of jobs to the surrounding communities. The coffee is cultivated in and around La Tigra National Park and its vital watershed; therefore, the farmers have implemented low impact and environmentally sustainable cultivation practices.

COMISAJUL has also instituted a reforestation program, in which they purchase abandoned, clear-cut farmland and either convert it into shade grown coffee farms or regenerate the indigenous cloud forest. Through 2004, the co-op had reforested over 900 hectares of previously barren hillsides or sparsely shaded coffee farms.

In the early years of the cooperative’s founding, the residents of San Juancito often found themselves taken advantage of by local merchants, who would capitalize on the residents’ inability to travel by charging exorbitant prices for ordinary basic food products like oil, flour, butter, and beans. In 1986, the co-op founded a store to help control local prices by offering basic food items at cost.  The store is now self-sustaining, and has helped all residents of San Juancito escape exploitation from opportunistic local merchants.

In 1987, the cooperative used its financial and administrative resources to found a local high school.
Today, 600-700 students attend each year and have access to a program of Agribusiness Administration elaborated with support from the cooperative.

The co-op has also been responsible for bringing electricity to several communities in COMISAJUL’s production areas. While still only 50% of  its members have electricity in their homes, the cooperative has nonetheless been responsible for the installation of street lamps and extension of the power grid to five of its remote mountain producing communities.

About this certified coffee:  Each bag has a certified paper trail leading back to the COMISAJUL cooperative, confirming that the coffee was grown organically and responsibly, and the farmers received fair wages for their hard work.
