This estate is located in the heart of the central mountain range in the town of Adjuntas at an elevation of 2800 ft.  With an average yearly temperature of 72 degrees F.,  Adjuntas is nicknamed "the Switzerland of Puerto Rico."  The combination of high altitude, cool weather, rain, soil, and shade cover found at Hacienda Monte Alto, produces an ideal environment for the beans to ripen very slowly, allowing the flavor to concentrate and develop its favorable rich tasting characteristics. The Román family utilizes eco-friendly farming techniques, processes, and equipment to ensure a sustainable operation from cultivation through processing. Four generations of research and experimentation have distinguished this family as a role model for other coffee farms on the island.  In addition, since Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States, all workers receive at least minimum wage, worker's compensation, and unemployment benefits just as on mainland US.
